Iconic stop-motion armatures and puppets from films like Star Wars, Robocop 2, Starship Troopers, and Jurassic Park are assembled at the Prop Store facility as part of creature master and animator Phil Tippett's collection in search of new homes. It's part of Prop Store's massive Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction taking place next week, and we're on location to take a close look at the meticulous machining and design of these pieces that show a fascinating slice of special effects history.

It's cool that they have Tippett's stuff but at the same time I'm hoping he didn't have to sell the stuff he didn't want to sell last time because he has fallen on hard times cause that would be a bummer. I'm sure his huge fandom would much rather have donated to some kind of gofundme than to have his props go to who knows who.

"Anyone who has visited Tippett's studio might recognize some of these!" Really, not anyone who has watched, you know, the movies?
Gabi Koonings

Some armatures look so simple, but the joints have to work right, have the right movement, sometimes several ways, and not be too loose nor too tight. And yeah, the fact that with enough time you can do awesome stop motion with them is just so cool.

I know you have a baby at home norm, but the mask and gloves is absurd. I don’t know when you shot this, and it might of been smack dab in the middle of the hysteria. But this is just distracting

WTF! Stop trying to normalize this Bullshit pandemic. Love this channel. but if this rubber glove/face mask crap continues, I'm done with you. I am sad to say I had to give this video a hands downs. We are forced to deal with this issue all the time now in our every day lives. Now we must watch it in the videos on this platform that before allowed us some escape.

I wish more modern filmmakers would use model miniature and stop motion effects. I mean, I know Christopher Nolan uses some, but I'd like to see more go back to old-school effects, especially with the updates of modern tech to allow for such effects to be useful.

Ohlourdes Padua So, why are you arguing against stop motion and model effects like it is your problem?
Ohlourdes Padua
Ohlourdes Padua 3 months ago
@Daniel S That is not our problem but the problem of the studio...
Daniel S
Daniel S 3 months ago
Ohlourdes Padua But sometimes doing CG because it’s cheaper doesn’t sell realism. When you watch the Alien Queen sequences in Aliens, it feels more real and scary as hell with the use of puppetry of a large and small scale Queen than the CGed Queen in Alien vs. Predator does. Sometimes, CG doesn’t cut it where miniatures and stop motion does. And that’s what I’m saying. And with the advent of digital cameras and advancements in computer tech, you can literally do in less time what took ILM months do for the first Star Wars film, with a guarantee the effect will look just as good, and continue to hold up years later. THAT is what I’m saying.

Threezero was making a 1/6 scale Cain figure that they announced many years ago but the project has been in limbo for a very long time. You can see an unpainted prototype on google image by searching Threezero Cain. It would have been crazy expensive if they did release it but I still wish they did.

BasicPaul 2 months ago
surfdigby dr who is done on a tiny budget. All of their props are low end tv worthy, but it plays alright on film.
BasicPaul 2 months ago
Attila TheHUN tonnes of museums have permanent film and prop exhibitions. They would be no less likely to be lost or destroyed then in the hands of private collectors. The trouble here is that people with far too much money are the ones who can afford these things. They might not be the super fans, but people who just want something cool to brag about. Who’s to say any of this stuff end up in t hands of people who would truly value it... we just don’t know for the most part. Sure the smaller items maybe, but the big ticket amazing props which are part of film history... my guess is that they’ll all be lost to the world. They will often just be behind closed doors so that nobody can ever see them again in person, which is a crying shame. That’s the main reason a film specific museum would be best.
Zveebo 3 months ago
@Crushenator500 Oh, cool - Lucas definitely has enough money and contacts to create something great if he puts his mind to it!
Crushenator500 3 months ago
@Zveebo Supposedly George Lucas is building a huge museum in LA that would have these kinds of things. Not sure what the current status of it is, but it sounds very cool
Zveebo 3 months ago
A museum would be perfectly possible (other museums look after much more sensitive and difficult to care for material) but would require a lot of money. Probably the best hope is that a big collector sets up a museum to preserve their collection for the future.

A better time. CGI stinks. I havent seen a horror that has been even slightly scary in years. My favorite was the Thing with Curt. Having slime and gore actually existing on a set makes the picture made so much more sweet being its physically there. So much talent and art taken away by lazy cheap computerized pixels.

I don't know Mr. Tippett, and so I cannot answer this question in regards to him. However, in a broader view, Mr. Tippett is nearly 70 years old. While we, as a people, are living longer and longer, 70 is still a fair run. At some point, we have to acknowledge that we're not going to be here forever, and so we don't need all the "things" we have in our life. If it were me, I'd rather be in control of how those things are dispensed with, rather than letting a feeding frenzy happen after I'm gone. Mr. Tippett, in working with The Prop Store, probably knows that these pieces will be treated with respect and not just set up in a yardsale somewhere. Again, I don't know Mr. Tippett, so I'm just sharing my own thoughts. But I don't know if it's a logical leap to think there might be something wrong just because he's thinning out his collection.
